Program Summary

Depending on its intended application in Fluoroscopy or CT, Barium Sulfate (BaSO₄ ) contains specific combinations of additional ingredients that support the diagnosis of disease, define treatment options, and improve patient outcomes. When used for the anatomical evaluation of the GI tract or the physiology of swallowing, a comprehensive understanding of the clinical utility of Barium products and their additives, is needed. This accredited program explains the differences and the benefits of each additive and is designed to increase knowledge about the clinical applications of Barium.

Dr. Sireci will provide a comprehensive overview of each Barium product, its indication and intended use. Following the presentation questions from the audience were addressed in a moderated Q&A session.

Educational Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Explain the role that BaSO₄ plays in barium-containing contrast media.
Review the purpose of each ingredient/additive found in BaSO₄ contrast media products currently available for fluoroscopic and radiographic examinations.
Describe the formulation of barium products that are appropriate for single and double contrast anatomic radiographic evaluation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
Summarize qualities of the barium-containing contrast media used in evaluation of swallowing that make them most appropriate for that application.
State the properties of barium-containing contrast media used in computed tomography (CT) applications

Presenter

Steven Sireci, MD

Dr. Sireci is an Executive Director of Medical Affairs who serves as the Head of Medical Services - Americas for Bracco Diagnostics Inc. He has been with Bracco for 20 years in various medical scientific roles.

He is currently involved in clinical research and regulatory support for Bracco nuclear medicine products, most notably CardioGen-82 (rubidium Rb 82 generator) and Kinevac (sincalide). He also supports marketing, scientific communication and education for Bracco’s Varibar® product line, and for the company’s barium sulfate products in general. In his Medical Services role, he also provides scientific support and training on Bracco contrast media to the Bracco Professional Services unit, and contrast media Sales Force and customer base.

Dr. Sireci received his M.D. degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and completed residency training in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of New York, and is board certified in both of those specialties. He was previously an Assistant Professor of Radiology with Columbia University.

Radiologic Technologists:
This course meets all criteria and has been approved by the AHRA, The Association for Medical Imaging Management for One (1) ARRT Category A CE Credit.

Radiology Administrators:
This course meets all CRA renewal credit criteria and has been approved for one (1) continuing education credit in the following CRA domains: Operations Management and Asset Resource Management.

Speech Language Pathologists:

This course is offered for 0.1 ASHA CEU’s (Intermediate Level)

Clinical Utility of Barium Sulfate Products: Formulation Determines Appropriate Use
